Columbia Chamber of Commerce Supports "Strong Mayor" Proposal

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO)-- Steve Benjamin's proposal for a strong mayor system has support from Columbia's business community.

Thursday afternoon the Columbia Chamber of Commerce released a statement in support of the mayor's proposal to change the way the city is governed.

Under the current system the mayor has the same amount of executive power as the other members of the city council.

Based on Benjamin's proposal, more of the decision making capabilities would rest with the mayor.

In the statement, Chamber of Commerce Chair Lee Bussell says, "Business leaders across Columbia are frustrated with how long it takes to get things done in this city.A strong mayor form of government would be an incredible economic development tool for the Columbia region,"  Mayor Benjamin will push for a voter referendum at next week's city council meeting August 13th.
