Mayor Benjamin shows support for InnerSole

Columbia Mayor Steve Benjamin showed his strong support for University of South Carolina women’s basketball coach Dawn Staley’s InnerSole campaign to provide a new pair of sneakers to every child in need by personally donating several pairs of sneakers earlier today and encouraging others to do the same.

“It’s amazing the impact something as simple as a new pair of sneakers can have on a young person’s sense of pride and self-worth,” said Mayor Benjamin. “And when you’re talking about a child facing serious issues like homelessness and poverty, it can be a life changer.”

“I’m proud to support Coach Staley and her sole movement for change and we’re going to keep encouraging people to give until we put a new pair of sneakers on the feet of every child in need.”

Over 300 million children are shoeless around the world and over 100 million of those children die from preventable diseases caused by the lack of proper footwear.
